What exactly are they doing to try and combat or change our issue?
The Shanghai Sunrise organization has a sponsorship program, and they give out a 2,500 education sponsorship for all unprivileged students from 1st grade to 9th grade. For future academic years, a two-tiered sponsorship system will be used. There will be one sponsorship donation amount for compulsory education-aged students and another sponsorship donation amount for high school and university-aged students.
What are some of the things we like about their program?
Some of the things I liked about their program are that there aren’t only volunteers from the local community, but also from other countries all around the world who help and support their organization. I also liked how they arrange special events three times a year for students, volunteers, sponsors etc. I think it’s also good that they will continue to sponsor all the students currently in the program for as long as they qualify for the sponsor ship.
What are some questions we have about it?
One question that we're still wondering about is why a child from a divorced family cannot be eligible but those single parent families with a deceased parent can be eligible.
How could we become involved with this organization?
We could become involved with this organization by sponsoring a student through it, and we can perhaps we can try to get volunteers who want to help us with organizing future field trips, creating things to sell, and so much more.
Shanghai Sunrise is the only organization working on the issue universal education for all in Shanghai. They have a sponsorship program for first to ninth graders in Shanghai. Later they will put together a donation amount for both compulsory education and high school and university. I like that they involve other countries as well as local volunteers. I also like that they actually sponsor students instead of helping them subtly and from the sidelines. We could become involved with this organization by sponsoring a student through it, and of course we have much to learn from its action plan and goals.
We are focusing on a local school in Shanghai, Hai Chen.
Why did we choose this organization?
We chose this because we wanted to actually take action and improve on this issue. Hai Chen School gives us an opportunity to make a difference instead of just raising awareness or studying another organization. Focusing on a school gives us first-hand experience in this area.
What are some of the things we like about the school?
We are glad that they can accept volunteers and donations for their school. They are eager to start a relationship with us, and they seem to have an optimistic attitude about SAS.
What are some questions we have about it?
An obvious question for our purposes is what supplies they need. That way, we are able to fundraise and donate these supplies to the school. Another question is exactly how needy the school is. They were the receivers of our Giving Tree program, but they seem to be connected to the internet as we are able to email them. So, how rich or poor are they really?
How could we become involved with this organization?
We will be planning a field trip to Hai Chen School, and we will also fundraise to donate supplies to the school.
